Educated musicians who know their shit.
In his 2008 book, Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell argues that one of the keys to success is an investment of 10,000 hours of practice. The musicians featured in this infographic, includingCaribou’s Dan Snaith, Chromeo’s David Macklovich and Buffy Sainte-Marie, have not only managed to put in the time to become experts in their genres, but have somehow managed to acquire doctorates as well. In the infographic below, we break them down by artist, genre and field of study with surprising results.

To all you independent Canadian bands, here’s your chance for a great oppourtunity to play in LA!
Canadian Music Week writes:
Canadian Music Week is teaming up with FILTER Magazine to present a rare opportunity for Canadian bands to perform live at FILTER Magazine’s Culture Collide 2012 Festival. The four-day international festival - taking place October 4-7 in Los Angeles - will be welcoming artists from more than 20 countries, each bringing their unique take on music and culture to LA’s East Side. Already confirmed are performances by Junip, of Montreal, School of Seven Bells, Clinic, Penguin Prison, Class Actress and several more. And it all ends with a free Block Party in Echo Park on Sunday, October 7th.
FILTER Magazine has asked us to help them select the bands that will put Canada on their map. And we’re making the opportunity available to YOU!
If you are interested in playing at Culture Collide, submit your materials to us directly for consideration.
Apply at canadianmusicfest.com/apply (after Friday, May 18th) through our regular festival submission process using the promocode “cmfculture”. Submit all of the usual details including contact info, music, bio, photos, etc. by June 15th. Our festival team will review all submissions and forward recommendations to Culture Collide for their final selections and approval.
This is a showcasing opportunity, meaning a performance fee is not guaranteed. Artists will be responsible for their own travel expenses and accommodations, unless otherwise notified by Culture Collide. However, you may qualify for funding if you can demonstrate your export-readiness.
Spots are limited. This is a unique opportunity for all Canadian artists - famous or unknown. So don’t miss your chance to play LA and be recognized by one of the leading music magazines around.
